Some of the latest ceramic work, inspired by the silhouette photos I’ve been taking.  It feels like an unlikely congruence, but with its own logic.  I think.

Some more experiments in “picturehood”..

These pots are part of a project that I have been working on with potter Eric Lawrence. At first, I started photographing the pots as a way to document the project, but the photos surprised me. The pots seem to take on a different meaning when seen through the fixed perspective of the camera lens. The transformation from 3-D to 2-D seems almost virtual, but of course they are still pots, living in the analog world. These photos reveal a whole new side (pun intended) to these pots that I had not realized. Something to do with angles and planes, perspective and picturehood. Like tracking the transformation from three dimensionality to two, then into imagery.

Here are the other halves of the pots. After cutting a pot in half, I flattened it with a rolling pin. This was much harder to do than it looks. Then again, it’s my mistake to think that anything in clay could be “easy”.

I’ll post more on this project later.
